How aquariums work in Planet Zoo 2
Aquariums are a habitat type of their own, new in Planet Zoo 2. From Frontier's aquarium feature:
- Building: you put up barriers as for a land habitat, choosing their size, direction and height, then add an aquarium staff gate and connect it to your paths so keepers can reach the animals. Ready-made aquarium blueprints are available too.
- Space: for aquatic animals, space means the volume of water in the aquarium.
- Salinity: a network of water filters feeds each aquarium and can be set for fresh water, salt water or brackish water. A saltwater species cannot survive in fresh water, so the water has to match the animal.
- Temperature and light: each species has a preferred water temperature, which you set at the aquarium's staff gate, along with the lighting.
- Cleaning: dirty water makes the animals harder for guests to see and raises the risk of disease. Keepers dive in to clean the glass, and aquariums need maintenance against leaks; some barrier types resist cracks better than others.
- Guests: a guest gate lets you run a tunnel through the water, and the glass can be one-way, curved inwards or outwards. Aquariums can also span several floors or sit underground.
Which water and temperature each species needs is in the in-game Zoopedia, not on the online one; we add them to each animal once two videos of the released game confirm them. Until then the biomes are the best guide: the aquarium animals come from six of them, Estuarine (9), Lakes and Rivers (8), Mangrove (6), Open Sea (11), Reef (22) and Wetlands (1). The Planet Zoo 2 biomes page lists every animal of each biome.
Fish that also fit an exhibit
15 smaller fish are listed for both an aquarium and an exhibit, so you can show them in either: the African Tigerfish, Blue and Gold Fusilier, Bluespine Unicornfish, Blunthead Cichlid, Boeseman's Rainbowfish, Brown Trout, Clown Anemonefish, Clown Loach, Common Rudd, Giant Gourami, Indo-Pacific Sergeant, Palette Surgeonfish, Schooling Bannerfish, Threespot Damselfish and Yellow Tang. They also appear in the exhibit animals list.
No dolphins or whales
Frontier's FAQ says Planet Zoo 2 has no cetaceans. It wants each species in the game to have an environment that suits it, and it is watching how conservation work on dolphins, whales and porpoises develops. The West Indian Manatee is the one aquatic mammal on the Zoopedia.
Planet Zoo 2 aquatic animal questions
How many aquatic animals are in Planet Zoo 2?
The official Zoopedia lists 34 aquarium animals as of October 11, 2026: 28 ray-finned fish, three sharks, one ray, the Hawksbill Turtle and West Indian Manatee.
What sharks are in Planet Zoo 2?
Three: the Blacktip Reef Shark, Great Hammerhead (Deluxe Edition only) and Indo-Pacific Leopard Shark. The Ocellated Eagle Ray is the only ray on the Zoopedia so far, and Frontier has named the Javanese Cownose Ray for launch.
Can you have a great white shark in Planet Zoo 2?
Not as of October 11, 2026: the great white shark is not on the official Zoopedia, and Frontier has not named it among the animals still to come.
Are there dolphins in Planet Zoo 2?
No. Frontier says it left out cetaceans (dolphins, whales and porpoises) so that every species in the game has an environment that suits it, and that it is following conservation research on them.
How do you set fresh water or salt water in a Planet Zoo 2 aquarium?
With water filters. Each aquarium is fed by a network of water filters that you set for fresh water, salt water or brackish water, and Frontier warns that saltwater animals cannot survive in fresh water. The water temperature is set separately, at the aquarium's staff gate.
Can guests walk through an aquarium in Planet Zoo 2?
Yes. Adding a guest gate to an aquarium lets you build a tunnel through the water, and tunnels can sit at different heights in the same aquarium.
Which fish can live in an exhibit instead of an aquarium?
15 fish are listed for both an aquarium and an exhibit: the African Tigerfish, Blue and Gold Fusilier, Bluespine Unicornfish, Blunthead Cichlid, Boeseman's Rainbowfish, Brown Trout, Clown Anemonefish, Clown Loach, Common Rudd, Giant Gourami, Indo-Pacific Sergeant, Palette Surgeonfish, Schooling Bannerfish, Threespot Damselfish and Yellow Tang.
