How aviaries work
An aviary is a habitat with a roof. From Frontier's aviary feature:
- Building: make a closed loop of barriers with a staff gate, as for any habitat, then select the habitat and choose Add Roof. A flat roof is built over the whole habitat from the barrier posts.
- Shaping the roof: place pillars anywhere inside and the roof follows them; you can change the pillars' height and rotation and the roof's material and curve, from tent shapes to domes.
- Flying space: every bird species needs a certain amount of room to fly. The Zoopedia gives each species' needs, and the aviary's info panel shows its Flyable Area. A higher roof or a bigger habitat adds flying space.
- Nests: birds need nesting sites to breed. Cavity nests and cup nests suit tree-dwelling birds; water platforms and mud nests suit waders and ground birds. Cavity nests have a camera for watching eggs and chicks.
- Sharing: some birds can live with other bird species and with land animals; the Zoopedia says which.
- Walk-through aviaries: for sociable birds, a guest gate and a path let visitors walk through the aviary.
The exact flying space, group size and companions of each bird are in the in-game Zoopedia; we add them to each bird once two videos of the released game confirm them.

Birds that stay on the ground
Not every bird flies in the game. The African Penguin and Common Ostrich are listed for terrestrial habitats, so they live in normal habitats instead of aviaries.
Threatened flying animals
6 of the 12 flying animals are threatened in the wild according to their Zoopedia entries: Great Hornbill (vulnerable), Javan Green Magpie (critically endangered), Long-Tailed Parakeet (vulnerable), Secretarybird (endangered), Shoebill (vulnerable) and White-Backed Vulture (critically endangered).
Planet Zoo 2 flying animal questions
How many flying animals are in Planet Zoo 2?
Twelve as of October 11, 2026: the Eurasian Bittern, Golden Eagle, Great Hornbill, Greater Flamingo, Javan Green Magpie, Long-Eared Owl, Long-Tailed Parakeet, Secretarybird, Shoebill, Toco Toucan, White-Backed Vulture and White-Tailed Sea-Eagle. All of them are birds.
How do you add a roof to an aviary in Planet Zoo 2?
Select the habitat and choose Add Roof. The game builds a flat roof over the whole habitat from its barrier posts; place pillars inside to change its shape, and adjust their height and the roof's material and curve.
How much flying space does a bird need in Planet Zoo 2?
Each species needs its own amount. The in-game Zoopedia lists every bird's requirement, and the aviary's info panel shows its Flyable Area; raising the roof or enlarging the habitat adds space.
Can guests walk through an aviary in Planet Zoo 2?
Yes, with sociable birds: add a guest gate and a path through the aviary. Frontier says some shy birds need plenty of space instead.
Are penguins and ostriches flying animals in Planet Zoo 2?
No. The African Penguin and Common Ostrich are birds, but the Zoopedia lists them for terrestrial habitats, not aviaries.
Is the Golden Eagle in the base game?
No. The Golden Eagle is one of the six Deluxe Edition animals, so it only comes with the Deluxe Edition.
